Inside Balboa Park’s Mingei International Museum, Artifact at Mingei offers a dining experience rooted in the museum’s mission to celebrate global folk art, craft, and design. The restaurant describes its cooking as “craft cooking inspired by ancient methods + spices + botanicals,” a fitting tribute to the museum’s collections.
Culinary Director Tim Kolanko and Executive Chef Tony Coito lead the kitchen, crafting a menu that draws from international traditions. The cuisine is contemporary and international, with dishes that change seasonally and through a monthly regional dinner series. The March edition, for example, explores Andalusia with a multi-course progression featuring wood-fired Iberico secreto and traditional Andalusian desserts.
The regular lunch and dinner menus offer a wide range of small plates, dumplings, salads, and larger plates. Standouts include a roasted rainbow carrot with date harissa and almond dukkah, shrimp mandu dumplings with gochugaru chili flake, and a California swordfish moqueca with coconut broth. The cooking is precise, the flavors layered, and the presentation thoughtful.
The restaurant received a Michelin Recommended distinction in 2023, a recognition that aligns with its commitment to quality and creativity. The setting within the museum’s Commons level, designed by Jennifer Luce, feels like a welcoming living room for the park. Guests dining for dinner receive half off admission to the museum’s exhibitions.
